Our Story

Every Child Deserves to Grow Grounded

Brightroots Yoga was born from a simple belief: every family in our community deserves quality yoga instruction — not just those who happen to live near a studio.

Founder's Story

Why I Teach Kids Yoga

200 hours of yoga-teacher training registered with Yoga Alliance (RYT-200) · Teaching Kids Yoga Since 2008

My journey teaching kids yoga started in 2008, with a curriculum someone else had handed me — and within the first few classes, I could tell something wasn't working. Poses alone weren't holding a room full of eight-year-olds; it took years of trial and error to understand why, and what I learned changed how I've taught every class since. That's the reason a Brightroots class blends breath-work, storytelling, and movement, rather than just poses.

Eighteen years and countless classes later, I finally built a program around everything those years taught me — including a few moments with kids I still think about today, and that shaped what I believe this work is really for.

Our Model

A Studio Was Never the Point

After years of teaching yoga to children in traditional studio settings, Suchitra noticed a gap close to home: the families who needed this most — in parks, in daycares, in under-resourced schools across the Bay Area — often had no easy way to reach it at all.

So instead of asking families to come to a studio, Brightroots comes to them. We partner with the schools, daycares, and Parks & Recreation departments already woven into daily life in neighborhoods across the Bay — so a child's yoga class is never a special trip, just part of the community they already belong to.

Our Mission

"To make high-quality yoga education accessible to every child in California."

We do this the way any good neighbor would: by showing up. We partner with the schools, daycares, and community organizations Bay Area families already know and trust, bringing certified instructors, thoughtful curriculum, and genuine joy into spaces where kids already feel at home.

What We Stand For

Our Core Values

🌱

Accessibility

Every child deserves quality movement education, regardless of neighborhood, school district, or family income. We work closely with local partners to keep programming affordable and reach the families who need it most.

Excellence

Our curriculum is research-backed, age-differentiated, and taught exclusively by certified instructors who specialize in working with children. We hold ourselves — and every class we teach in your community — to the highest standard.

🤝

Community

We show up where Bay Area families already are — the schools, daycares, and rec centers that anchor a neighborhood — because the best programs grow out of real relationships, not one-off classes. We're collaborators, not competitors, in every community we serve.

💚

Joy

Kids yoga should be playful, imaginative, and something children genuinely look forward to. Every Brightroots class is designed to be the best part of a child's week — and a small, joyful thread in your family's.

Why Brightroots

What Makes Us Different

🗺️

We Come to You

No fixed studio. We teach at the schools, daycares, and community centers your family already knows — no commute, no new routine, just yoga woven into the week you already have.

👧

Built for Kids (Not Adults)

Our curriculum is designed specifically for ages 5–9 and 10–12 — not adult yoga scaled down. Shorter sequences, storytelling, games, and age-appropriate language kids actually respond to.

🔬

Research-Backed

Every element of our curriculum is grounded in peer-reviewed research on childhood development, motor skills, and emotional regulation. A 2024 scoping review in Frontiers in Education found recurring improvements in self-esteem, self-regulation, and concentration among children ages 3–10 in school-based yoga programs.

🏢
